I'm going to move the crossbeams from their current chest-high position to within about 16 inches from the crest, which will be to about the middle of the ventilation louvres, so I guess I'll have to move them up a few inches. Although everyone in this family is short, I don't want to lower the ceiling so far that guests are hitting their heads on it.
I stil haven't decided what to do with the inactive chimney on the north side. I thought about taking it down to below floor length and flooring over it, but a few taps on the top bricks suggest that they won't be easy to remove. I've already floored around it, and I suppose I'll just leave it in place for another day. We've also talked about making a laundry chute out of it. It passes through the walk-in closet on the second floor and the laundry room on the ground floor, so the location is right.
Apart from the few areas of the inner roof that have been water damaged, the wood seems to be in unusually good shape. The ventilation louvre on the north side will also need to be moved upward a half a foot or so, to fit into the space above the ceiling that I'm going to add. The current window is barely above floor level and, since I'll be replacing it anyhow, I might just move it up a bit.
The roofing supports are made of very rough lumber, with large gape between boards, knotholes, and broken pieces. Whenever we get around to putting in a new roof, I'll probably replace some or all of them as well.
Just another view of the inner side of the roof.
A close up, showing the inner side of the roofing material.
Same as above.
