Looksmart at Zeal

LookSmart at Zeal
Zeal of Approval Award

I’ve been registered with Zeal since June 14, 2000, but that doesn’t mean that I necessarily know my way around.

Zeal began as a volunteer directory, much like the Open Directory Project. Getting in was even easier than at the ODP, and the standards were lax.

When Zeal was purchased by LookSmart a couple of years ago, things got tougher .. and better, in some ways. Editing as a volunteer at Zeal is not a leisure activity. Although you can certainly spend only the amount of time on the project as you’d like, quality control is high.

But it’s fun, and perhaps I wouldn’t find it to be so difficult if I weren’t so entrenched in the ODP way of editing. The guidelines at Zeal are different in some significant ways, and it’s a little tough switching back and forth.

Once I get better at it, I think it’ll be funner. This is my site here, and I don’t have to use real words if I don’t want to.

Before I go too far, I should perhaps clarify that this is my site and these are my words, none of which are the property or responsibility of either Zeal or LookSmart. Simply put, while at Zeal I will do my darndest to edit as they would like me to, but within these pages I speak only for myself.
